Dinner and a Show, British Style

Today we had a late lunch at Duck and Waffle, a famous restaurant on the 40th floor of the Heron Building. You ride up in a glass elevator, which provides you with a speedy vertical tour of the area.

The restaurant itself features floor-to-ceiling windows on all four walls. On a clear day I suppose it's a spectacular view of the city, but today was quite gray and rainy. However, the weather made it seem a bit like eating inside a giant rain cloud, which is in itself a unique experience.

This was pretty much our view.
The food was impressive--Duck and Waffle should definitely be on any London itinerary provided you like food and heights.

The eponymous dish (the duck is hiding under the egg).
Jon's drink thinks it's a bird egg! It came carefully cushioned in a nest.
Tonight we saw The Mousetrap, the West End's longest running show. It's been running continuously since 1952 (in contrast, the longest running Broadway show--The Phantom of the Opera--has been running since 1988). It's an Agatha Christie murder mystery. I don't want to spoil anything, so I'll just say that while we weren't madly in love with it, the story was still entertaining (and extremely British). I find it funny that the longest running West End show is a murder mystery; also, among the top five longest running shows, two are straight plays of mystery/murdery/ghosty themes (The Woman in Black is the fourth longest running show). Looking at the longest Broadway runs, you have to get to #17 before you hit a straight play (Life with Father. Can't say I know much about it.)

Our plan for tomorrow is to see Buckingham Palace and Westminster Abbey. Here's hoping for better weather!
